GoalAlong 2016

Looking for a way to balance your ambitions and goals in one area of life with other areas? Me too! That’s why I created the GoalAlong.

It can be whatever you need it to be. Knitting 12 pairs of socks? We can help keep you on track. Working to write a novel? We can cheer you on. Stashing down? Up? Training for your first marathon? Learning how to say no and protect your boundaries? We can help you while we help ourselves.

I am still working through my personal journey to balance my ambitious nature with a need to be compassionate to myself. I am built to strive, but I need to find a way to be balanced. When I let my love of Adventure and Improvement start wearing their capital letters, I can accomplish great things but at the expense of my overall happiness and energy levels.

What is it?

If you imagine each role, each facet of yourself, as spokes on a wheel that you’re building from the center out, would you say that your wheel would roll smoothly? Do you feel balanced in the way you’ve developed the facets that are important to you?

Do your spokes roll smoothly?

How does it work?

Pick your focuses. They need to be truly important to you. Spend some time thinking about what you want to develop in the next 4 months. (We’re going to break the year down into 3 terms.)

Now, set a goal for the term and then break that into 4 monthly steps. Remember to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. The right kind of goal is fantastic. The wrong kind of goal sets you up to fail.

It’s probably a good idea to keep the number of your focuses to a small number. 3-5 maybe. “We should not allow the good things crowd out the best things.” ~ Valerie Bendt

Simple Steps for the GAL

How do I participate?

There are a few ways to participate.

  1. Just do it. Maybe comment here.  But take the parts of the idea that work for you and go have at it.
  2. Post updates on Instagram using #GoalAlong. If you follow me, I’ll be posting a “How are you doing?” type check-in on the last day of the month to remind you.
  3. Come over to the Ravelry group and stake out your goals for the term January-April. At least once a month – or weekly if you need it – come back to the thread and post an update for us. I’ll earburn everyone on the last day of the month to make sure that you remember to come back and keep yourself accountable.
